FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ZIM LINES TO CALL ON THE PORT OF MOBILE ALABAMA STATE PORT AUTHORITY WELCOMES WORLDWIDE CONTAINER SERVICE
August 27, 2003, Mobile, Alabama - Zim-American Israeli Shipping Company Inc., the general agent for Zim Israel Navigation Company Limited (Zim Lines), announced today its plans to place new carrier service at the Alabama State Port Authority's Pier 2 Container Terminal. Zim Lines will provide a fixed day, weekly service into Mobile, Alabama. Cargo lifted at the Port Authority's Pier 2 terminal will be relayed to Zim's worldwide, mainliners at Kingston, Jamaica, Zim's offshore North American hub.
Alabama State Port Authority Director & CEO James K. Lyons said, "Zim Lines will provide shippers with world class container service from Mobile to North and South Asian ports, the Mediterranean, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. We enthusiastically welcome Zim Lines and looks forward to their success at the Port of Mobile." Todd Jones, the Port Authority's Manager for Carrier Marketing added, "Zim will provide importers and exporters in Alabama, as well as the Port's eighteen state hinterland, an opportunity to ship containers efficiently and cost effectively to and from a multitude of new destinations. Zim will contribute greatly to our container growth at both Pier 2 and the Authority's future Choctaw Point Terminal."
Zim Lines has tentatively scheduled an October 5th, inaugural voyage of the Zim Caribe Voyage 91 from Kingston, Jamaica. The route is as follows: Kingston – Tampa – Mobile – New Orleans – Houston – Kingston. The Zim Caribe, the Zim Mexico, and the Zim Houston will service this route. These three sister vessels are capable of carrying up to 1150 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit). The Port Authority expects the Zim Caribe to arrive at Mobile for her inaugural call on or about October 10th.
