Fairhope receives $3 million in federal funding for H. L. Sonny Callahan Airport

In a significant boost towards local economic development, Mayor Sherry Sullivan announced in a news release that City of Fairhope is set to receive $3 million in congressionally directed funding as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024, signed into law on March 9.

This boost comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and is designated for the H.L. Sonny Callahan Airport.

The federal funding is a strategic investment aimed at improving street, water and sewer infrastructure on light industrial land adjacent to the airport. These enhancements are deemed vital for the continued growth and development of the airport. U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) and Representative Jerry Carl (AL-01) played pivotal roles in securing these funds, highlighting the significance of the City of Fairhope and the wider region.

“This targeted funding will help expand and support operations at the H.L. Sonny Callahan Airport while also enhancing services so that the airport can continue to grow,” Sen. Britt said in the release. “I was proud to support this strategic infrastructure investment which will benefit local communities in Baldwin County by bolstering opportunities for economic development, ultimately strengthening our state’s future. I will continue to fight to bring Alabamians’ hard-earned tax dollars home and advance critical priorities for our great state.”

“Fairhope is one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama and in the country. With that comes major infrastructure needs like airports, roads and bridges to keep up with the city’s growing economy and population,” Rep. Carl said. “I am proud to secure $3 million for the H.L. Sonny Callahan Airport which is critical for Fairhope’s continued growth and success.”

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 represents a significant milestone for federal investments nationwide. Fairhope stands among the fortunate recipients of targeted funds aimed at stimulating growth and fostering economic development opportunities. This allocation highlights Fairhope's ongoing commitment to securing the resources necessary to support its fast-growing community.

“As a City, we are thankful and appreciate Senator Britt and Rep. Carl’s efforts to secure this important funding,” Sullivan said. “We look forward to being good stewards of these resources, which will allow us to support expanding operations and services and support our region’s tremendous growth in recent years.”
